History of liqueurs

The first notes on liqueur production date back to the 13th century. It is almost certain that the liqueur has evolved from medicinal drinks, and, for example, also King Louis XIV had already been consuming liqueur to relieve his heart problems. The golden age of classic liqueurs was at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and served as the basis for today’s cream liqueurs. Among the alcoholic beverages, liqueurs have the most varieties.

They can be made from a variety of raw materials, from sweet to bitter. The liqueur belongs to the short drink category and sugar and flavors are added to it. Based on the level of care of its preparation and on the purity of the materials used, we distinguish between fine (rosoglio) and common (aquavitae) liqueurs. Liqueurs containing a higher proportion of sugar and oil density are called cream liqueurs (cremes).
